One day training for volunteer youth workers

Our volunteer youth leaders are all busy and we are loathe to ask for them to give even more time - especially a whole Saturday, in order to undergo training. And yet training can give them the tools and skills they need to not only help them last longer but to make leadership easier and more enjoyable. Below are some upcoming training days for TARGET7, out most popular one day training programme that teaches 7 essential leadership skills.

  • 8 May 2010: Auckland: Manukau City Baptist, 9 Lambie Dr, Puhinui, Manukau from 9.00am-5.30pm
  • 15 May 2010: Canterbury Anglicans (all welcome), St Andrews at Rangi Ruru, 59 Hewitts Road, Merivale, Christchurch from 9.00am-5.30pm
  • 14 August: Bay of Plenty, Living Well Church, 47 Biak Street, Rotorua from 9.00am-5.30pm.

Mike King Visit

I mentioned in my last newsletter I mentioned the coming visit of Mike King, president of YouthFront Ministries in Kansas City and two seminars in Auckland and Christchurch. Since then I'm happy to announce that he has agreed to a third in Wellington. Take a moment to mark your calendars and note the change of venue for the Auckland meeting:

  • Auckland: 9.30am-4.00pm on Thursday 3 June at the Edge City Church, 44 George St, Kingsland, Auckland.
  • Wellington: 9.30am-4.00pm on Friday 11 June at Petone Baptist, 38 Buick St, Petone, Wellington.
  • Christchurch: 9.30am-4.00pm on Monday 14 June at Canterbury Youth Services, 472 Cranford Street, Papanui, Christchurch

Between these two seminars he will also be speaking at the Baptist Youth Ministries North Island Conference in Rotorua from 4-7 June, and Southern Leaders Training in Christchurch from 11-13 June.

Both Mike and YouthFront have an approach to youth ministry that affirms that transformation in youth people comes as they encounter Christ and grow in relationship with him. It is not a programme centred approach or even a purpose centred one. It is a "presence centred" way of doing youth ministry. It works to bring youth into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by creating environments where spiritual transformation occurs. It is not a "new" approach to discipleship but rather a return to many historical practices and a chance to jump off the programme centred roundabout.

Mike has many practical things today but he is also very inspirational - even prophetic, in what he says. I know you will be deeply challenged and inspired by what he has to say. Book these dates in your diary NOW - more details will follow later:

To read up more on Mike check out the YouthFront Website, his blog, and listen to him being interviewed (forward mp3 to 10 mins in). Also check out my review of his book "Presence Centered Youth Ministry" here.

Supervision/Coaching

Often in youth ministry we get "stuck" with problems and questions and don't know where to turn. We need someone with experience and a range of new ideas to assist us. Yet finding a supervisor or coach to meet with who has a good amount of youth ministry experience is not easy. Such people are few and far between and may live too far away or be too busy. For a few years now I have provided supervision/coaching for local youth pastors in the Palmerston North area where I live and I'm currently looking to expand this service. While face to face is ideal I'm willing to do supervision or coaching by skype (audio or video) or by phone (at your expense). It may be if I have a number of expressions of interest in one area I can travel there every 6-8 weeks and meet for up to an hour with each person.

If you are interested in ongoing open ended supervision or one or more coaching sessions then download a copy of the Supervision/Coaching handbook here and read through it noting the difference between supervision and coaching. If you are still interested email me and we can explore how best to proceed.

New Youth Ministry Books

A number of new youth ministry books have recently been released. Catch up on the contents of each with a mix of interviews and sample chapters:

  • "The Church of Facebook" by Jesse Rice: Check out the introduction and first chapter of "The Church of Facebook" through a link at the bottom of this brief article on the book. (Youthworker Journal).
  • "Relationships Unfiltered" by Andrew Root: Youth ministry author Tony Jones describes Andrew Root's book "Relationships Unfiltered" as "the single most important youth ministry book in a generation". • "The Promise of Despair" by Andrew Root: An audio discussion with the author.
  • "Wonder, Fear, and Longing" by Mark Yaconelli: In this interview, Mark Yaconelli reflects on themes from his new book including an authentic life of prayer, why sometimes the simplest prayers are best and his deep desire to help people of all ages discover the prayer within each of them.
  • "A Tale of Two Youth Workers" by Eric Venable: In this creative fable, you’ll be invited into the ongoing conversations between Wes and Britt as they explore what it takes to have an effective youth ministry.

An Urgent Need for Support

As a result of setting a budget for the next financial year YouthTRAIN is faced with the reality of having to cut back activities. Not everything we do generates the income needed to sustain the trust and we are reliants on donations of grants, Writing newsletters takes time and there is little tangible return. It is a blessing to do it but in the end the bills have to be paid. We are a faith venture and not underwritten by any organisation or denomination. If you have read this far it's a safe bet that these newsletters are helpful to you. If so why not give a one off donation from your personal or ministry budget - no amount is too small. If you are interested in offering some support - regularly or as a one off donation click here to find out more. We have a link to our automatic payment form plus a page that tells you how you can make contributions through internet banking.
