Caring for the Carers

"The church is primarily about people and so we should be putting those with people-related gifts into leadership." This was a quote that arrested my attention a number of years ago and changed my approach to youth ministry. We had a team of leaders that were great organisers but lacked leaders who were great carers of young people. We formed this second team and it quickly became the more important team - the leaders I poured time and training into which in turn resulted in young people who were well discipled.

The latest P4 Training Module called “Caring for Young People” contains many of the things I taught our leaders, things that every carer of young people needs to know. It consists of five sessions:

  1. Adolescent Development: In order to be effective in working with young people we need to understand the various developmental stages they are going through, This seminar will teach you what is "normal" along with ministry strategies.
  2. Adolescent Needs: Knowing young people's underlying needs helps us a great deal when it comes to providing pastoral care. In this seminar you will learn five primary adolescent needs, and how to meet them in your youth ministry.
  3. Listening Skills: The first step in providing effective pastoral care is learning to listen, but many of us are not naturally good at this. Here you will learn and get to practice the primary skills for pastoral care.
  4. Resolving Skills: Listening is the first step but it is not enough if we are to help young people resolve problems they face. The five skills taught in this seminar will show you how to help young people look to God in doing just this.
  5. Discipline: How do we discipline young people at youth group without it seeming like school. Here we learn practical solutions for establishing a disciplined environment and dealing with issues as they arise.

If you'd like to sponsor the P4 seminar “Caring for Young People” contact me at murray@youthtrain.com. Cost is $750 for a full day's seminar. By charging $35 per person you need 22 people to cover costs - although depending on where you live you may have additional costs such as travel and accommodation to be met. These costs covers a 40 page participant's workbook and a copy of the 60 page booklet or each attendee to read as part of their ongoing training.
